Hits and Misses of 2011 (Makeup)

Here goes away yet another year. 2011 literally flew by.  It has been amazing, especially because I started blogging; a sudden desire which grew and grew and has brought me here today. I never imagined I could reach out to so many gorgeous people, when I don’t even consider myself any makeup expert. I have learned A LOT this year and hope I do more in the next.
I have always been tempted by makeup, but never put on much. I still don’t, but have certainly started hoarding a lot. My collection prospered from a tiny space to a whole cabinet. Haha. And to do that collection some justice, those beautiful li’l things need some credit and where there are some delights there are regrets too.
Today you can explore through my Hits and Misses of 2011.

MISSES

After seeing some comments especially about Misses, I have decided to update the WHYs about each MISS.

§   Avon Nail Colour in ‘Rose Water’
It is a beautiful colour which is a torture to apply; very streaky and thick, even when I first bought it.

§   Luscious Pressed Compact Powder in ‘No.2’
I expected a lot from Luscious, but this compact is way too powdery. The shade is very yellow so I use it  on my dark circles, but for the face I just pat it. For PKR 875 there are many better options available.

§   Oriflame Beauty Kajal Eyeliner
I bought it after hearing so many good things. But it is a total waste for a Kajal that costs PKR 400. It is darker than the usual Kajal but smudges badly making my dark circles appear worse.  And then it doesn't come off that easily so I keep looking like a goth for a couple of days.

§   Rimmel London Extra Super Lash Building Mascara
It does nothing to the lashes. No volumising, no lengthening, no separating of lashes.

§   Jelly Pong Pong Dynamic Duo in ‘Ballerina Lace’ (read review)

§   Motives Luxe Precision Eye Line in ‘Sapphire’
A beautiful colour that doesn't show up.

§   Oriflame Visions Bootilicious Lip Gloss in ‘Bootie Call’
It must break the records of being the gloss with the minimum(almost none) staying power. Being so dark in shade it makes your lip look awfully bare later.

§   E.l.f Natural Radiance Blusher in ‘Coy’
The colour doesn't show up much, it comes off easily and the blush is very chalky.

NOTD: Polka Splatter

I just found out recently I LOVE polka dots. They look great in all forms, don’t they? On dresses, on nails. Simple and classy. I received nail dotting tools from Born Pretty Store and this is how my experiment turned out with them. I will be reviewing this whole Born Pretty Store’s Rhinestones+Dotting Tools kit soon.

The simplicity of this nail art is what makes it stand out. I covered my nails with a shimmery earthen beige colour and then dotted in different sizes with an assortment of nail colours. Even my colour shades are purposefully random. I wanted to add some rhinestones too, and I even did my ring finger with it but to me the lonely polka dots still looked nicer.

Review: Beautyuk Lip Lust in Moulin Rouge

I was sent this lip gloss to try by Just4girls.pk. If there is still a chance in a million, you don't know about them, read here.
This Lip Lust is described as superfantabulous. Is it really?

BEAUTYUK CLAIMS
Lips, lips, oh luscious lips! Richly pigmented and lightly scented gloss to bring a new dimension to any look. Flavoured with papaya, mint or strawberry and applied with a soft and svelte applicator, everything about this gloss leaves you feeling all warm inside!

PRICE
PKR 600 (£2.99)
It is available on Just4girls.pk
International readers can buy it online from beautyuk.

FACTS AND FIGURES
Available in 11 different shade the Lip Lust comes in a squeezable-tube. I have the shade ‘Moulin Rouge’.

MY OPINION
I was not really excited about the prospect of trying out Beautyuk Lip Lust because I have never been a glitter gloss fan. On the contrary, I stay away from them as far as possible. The gloss comes in a very sturdy tube, too sturdy I’d say because sometimes it takes more than a gentle squeeze to shake it out. It has a big applicator, that I find difficult to maneuver but maybe the case is only me, because according to the many reviews I have read around, people love how easy the application is with this applicator.

I love bright, vivid colours so this was one thing I was looking forward to. Well, the gloss certainly is pigmented, red with a pink tinge. It is not at all sticky, the formula sets perfectly on the lips. And miracles of miracles, the glitters/shimmers in the gloss are the prettiest I have ever seen. They don’t appear like big chunks, just settle on the lips, giving a glossy, sparkly sheen. Because of its pigmentation I was expecting the gloss to have a good staying power; but like most lipglosses it starts wearing off after an hour and a half. Still, the colour is very flattering, glitter glosses look dull on me but this one just glorifies :P
Here is how the shade looks:

RATING
All in all, the feeling of disappointment at receiving this gloss did change to delight, especially by the way it looks on me. And yes, it totally makes me want to try some more shades in Lip Lust.

Just4girls.pk - Where Pakistanis shop!

The moment Just4girls.pk emerged into scene it changed the concept of shopping.  Shopping online was never that easy, secure or fun for Pakistanis. Honestly, I myself had never indulged in online shopping before. But now I am just too lazy to go outside to buy makeup or jewelry or hair products. For the comfort that Just4girls.pk provided me and a lot of other Pakistanis, I thought I’d post about my recent haul that I got through them and at the same time let all the uninformed ones know what a blessing this website actually is.

MY SHOPPING EXPERIENCE
Like all normal people, online shopping scared me. But I couldn’t resist the so-awesome and unavailable-locally makeup items on Just4girl.pk. That is how I purchased for the first time. The first impressive thing is you are kept updated about your order status and the second is the speediest courier service ever. The moment my money was transacted and I got a call of confirmation, after 12 hours my order arrived, so fast that even my Dad was shocked. Everything was properly packed and I got two key rings for free that became home to so many of my lost keys :P I posted about my first haul here.
I browse Just4girls.pk almost daily and it’s hard that if you do so you go around not buying anything. So here goes my second haul.

I got:
Soap & Glory You Cube™ Gift Box (PKR 2050)
Juelz Large Coloured Marble Effect Resin Ring – Bronze (PKR 99)
Juelz 3 Pair Variety Diamante Ear Stud – Red, Blue (PKR 99 each)
Juelz 3 Pair Variety Diamante Ear Stud – Purple (PKR 99)
Sleek Makeup Pout Paint – Milkshake (PKR 950)
Beautyuk Lip Lust – No.10 Moulin Rouge (PKR 600)

I love Just4girls.pk for replying promptly to each and every query. I badly wanted the Sleek Makeup Pout Paint which was ‘out of stock’ and they somehow arranged one for me. They were short of the Juelz Ear Studs in Turquoise, so they sent me two in its place (one complimentary). There is never a time Just4girls.pk don’t make their each and every customer feel special. I also got the Beautyuk Lip Lust as a PR sample, and I will be reviewing it soon.
Trust me, if you have never indulged in online shopping before, THIS is the place to start from.
Phew! This post has gotten quite long but I just couldn’t resist raving about my favourite online shopping website.

Have you ever shopped from Just4girls.pk?

NOTD: The Strawberry Finger

I was browsing nail blogs when I saw this mani and I so wanted to re-create it; my youngest sister was lazing nearby and I grabbed her hand. It’s a nail art inspired by strawberries created with the cheapest of polishes and a free hand. It is damn easy to make. I can’t recall the blog I saw this similar mani on, sorry about that.
The cherry red nail polish is neither matte nor glittery, it has glossy finish that I wanted. I have applied only one coat to make it more pink than red. The ring finger is the real winner. The nail tipped with forest green and dotted with spots looks fruity and yet dainty. I did not have a dark green nail colour so I have used a bornprettystore stamping polish, thus the thick gooey effect. I have also smudged the index finger because I just can't wait and be patient enough to let the polish dry.
So well what do you think of this?

Review: Beautyuk Blemish Perfect Concealer

BEAUTYUK CLAIMS
Blemish be gone!
Apply it over your foundation to finish off the perfect Natural Look!

PRICE
PKR 550 (£2.49)
I bought it from Just4girls.pk.

FACTS AND FIGURES
This is a stick concealer available in only two colours; Nude and Buff. I bought the lighter shade ‘Nude’.

MY OPINION
I have using been the Rimmel Match Perfection Concealer(review here) for quite a while and I thought to give something else a try, because if used daily you will find yourself buying the Rimmel concealer once every month. I saw this Beautyuk concealer on Just4girls.pk while shopping and just added it to my cart.
Beautyuk Concealer is a stick concealer, looks just like a lipstick. They are great for on-the-spot application.  Most stick concealers that I have used made my under-eye area all cakey. This was not the case with this one. The Beautyuk concealer has a very creamy consistency and is totally odourless. It blends easily, applied with a brush or finger, giving a smooth finish. I really like that about it. But if you are looking for heavy coverage for your under-eyes then this may not be your solution. For me when it comes to everyday usage for concealing dark circles it works fine just that it does not hide them completely. It does a good job when applied over blemishes/dark spots and looks totally natural, doesn’t feel like you are wearing anything at all. It comes in two shades only so finding your perfect match maybe an issue. The one I bought worked out for me quite well.

Surprisingly, I can’t find this concealer anywhere on the Beautyuk official website nor can I get any information online about whether it is discontinuted or what. If you guys know anything enlighten me too.

RATING
It is a great concealer for blemishes and for not-so-visible dark circles. I probably won’t repurchase it and would like to try something else that works on my dark under-eye shadows.

Review: The Body Shop Born Lippy in Strawberry

Winter is a nuisance with chapped lips. No matter how many times you rush off to apply lip balms, glycerine or Vaseline you are still left with dried lips. Today I am going to review for you my favourite lip balm in another flavour (I reviewed Raspberry before) and a life-saver when it comes to chapped lips.

THE BODY SHOP SAYS
A glossy and moisturising lip balm, with a sweet fruity flavour, that leaves lips looking and feeling soft, smooth and kissable.

PRICE
PKR 590 ($ 6.00)
I bought it from The Body Shop outlet in Pakistan.
You can also get it from TBS online store here.

FACTS AND FIGURES
The lip balm comes in a tiny 10ml pot. I owned Raspberry flavour before, this time I bought Strawberry. Born Lippy is also available in more flavours besides these two.

MY OPINION
I am a huge fan of TBS lip balms, and they are the only ones I trust. I think our lips are a very sensitive part of our body and it is not right to play with them with poor quality products. Chapped lips; I can’t stand. I have to keep a lip balm handy all the time.
All these Born Lippies are slightly tinted and that’s what I love. This time I bought the Strawberry flavour which has a very sweet smell and no taste. People say it tastes sweet but seriously all my taste buds get is Vaseline. The very slight red tint is perfect, just giving enough life to my pale pink lips. The lip balm stays on for a good amount of time and leaves my lips super soft and smooth. This tiny pot seriously lasts for 6-8 months. If you are not bent on buying tinted lip balms then TBS Lip Butter is a better choice because they are more moisturising and are also available in chapsticks for people who find dipping finger into pots unhygienic.
Here is a swatch of how the Strawberry Born Lippy looks like:

RATING
I keep repurchasing these lip balms. It clearly tells how much I love them.

NOTD: Stamping with Born Pretty Store New Bowknot French Nail Art Stamp Template-m56

After the Hello Kitty and Floral Nail Stamping Kit I had my eyes on the Bowknot Stamp Template. The French tips looked like the coolest thing EVER. And I was right when I got the chance to try.
See how I stamped my nails.

I applied a deep purple nail polish as a base coat and stamped it with silver. I am quite pleased with how it turned out. A recurring pattern of the French tip gives you a whole nail image, as on my ring finger, which I find  more awesome than just the French tips. Honestly, I love this plate more than the Hello Kitty one. Here is a bowknot stamp that I did on one finger. Doesn’t it look dainty?

This Bowknot stamp template costs only $2.99 and you can buy it from Born Pretty Store.

During this whole process of learning konading, I found that you don't need special konad polishes to make stamping work out. It is all about experimenting with different nail colours, knowing the basics of what a konad polish actually looks like and then finding the replica. I found some great substitutes for konad polishes in the local Pakistani brands. So if you guys are interested in knowing where to get those special konad-like polish, just let me know in the comments and I will do a post on it soon.

Review: Born Pretty Store 30 Color Lip Gloss Gel Lipstick Makeup Comestic Mirror

BORNPRETTY STORE SAYS
30 colours lip gel Brand new in retail package with a piece of mirror
Suitable for professional use and home use

PRICE
$8.54
Buy it online from Born Pretty Store.

FACTS AND FIGURES
This is a lip palette of 26 x 16 cm with 30 shades. The small colours have a diameter of 2.8 cm and the larger ones 3.8 cm.
Below are the swatches of all the colours of this palette.

MY OPINION
The palette itself has a very simple look and is very light, the packaging is inexpensive, all plastic inside. At least you know you won’t break it :P There is a cosmetic mirror attached to the palette. It makes it totally travel-friendly though the size maybe an issue to be fit in every crook and cranny. There is a transparent protective shield to protect the mirror from the lip colours. What counts is what is inside. In the palette you will find all kinds of colours, there are a lot of pinks and some reds, not to forget the weird shades of black, blue and green. To be honest, for only $8.54 I did not expect to be wowed by it. Lip shades in palettes seldom give any colour to your lips. BUT this palette did surprise me. The darker shades are VERY pigmented and bright. I LOVE that about it. You also get some great nudes and light shades for those non-dramatic days. There are so many shades to play around and mix n’match. I mean c’mon you are getting your own set of Pout Paints/Lip Tars for cheap. Seriously, I use lip colours from this palette four times a week. The lip colours are matte(except for a few which have a glossy texture) and feel drying. So I use them with a lip balm. They last quite long. I wear them to work, have lunch and when I am back home after 6 hours the colour is still there, just not that fresh. I don’t think I’d be finishing up the palette any time within a year. It is going to last that long or more. Even a swipe gives you enough product. Below is a swatch of a dark lip colour and a light lip colour to show you their pigmentation.

RATING
This is a great investment if you love playing with lip colours and don’t want to invest too much for your fun.
